How does couperose occur and what to do with it

Plus five useful cosmetics

We are used to searching for most answers to the  questions that concern us online. In the new material, we ask professionals in various fields such questions: burning, unexpected or common.

Couperose is the name of vessels that appear on the face skin; the situation is familiar to many, even those who hear the name for the first time. The visible vascular grid appears when the capillary walls weaken and expanded under the pressure of the blood flow vessels can not narrow naturally. This usually does not signal about serious health problems, but it can cause considerable discomfort. We talked with a dermatocosmetologist about how does couperose appear and who suffers from it, whether it can be prevented or cured, and what procedures should be avoided.

Many people believe that couperose is caused primarily by temperature changes, alcohol, smoking, coffee, ultraviolet light and stress, but the main cause remains a hereditary factor. Vascular wall weakness is often caused by genetics and manifests itself with age, and external influences play only a secondary role. In addition, autoimmune diseases, problems with the liver, stomach, intestines, taking certain medications (for example, hormonal), hypertension, pregnancy and menopause can trigger couperose. It is worth paying attention to food: the love for hot and spicy food can contribute to the fact that the vessels will become more noticeable.

Couperose can occur in those whose skin suffers from sharp temperature changes — for example, you like regularly going to the sauna or run in the cold, or you are a fan of active tanning; people with light and sensitive skin are often at risk.

It is very simple to determine the couperose — just clean the skin and examine it in good daylight. If your skin is thin, dry, sensitive and you can clearly see the translucent vascular network, if the skin reacts with redness to hot food and alcohol or to a temperature change, then you may need to think about prevention.

If you do not like couperose, a course of phototherapy can help: it tones the vascular wall, reduces the redness and skin sensitivity

Skin with a weak vascular network needs proper daily protection and likes serums and creams containing vitamins K, C, and silicon. Be sure to use a day cream with an SPF factor of at least 30, regardless the season.

Keep your hydration level up with masks containing aloe, lavender, collagen, and vitamin C. In addition, if you do not like couperose, a course of phototherapy (BBL), that is, exposure to broadband light, can help. It tones the vascular wall, reduces the area of redness, and reduces skin sensitivity. In this case, you will have to exclude chocolate, coffee, alcohol, hot and spicy food, and marinades from your diet.

Very often, for skin prone to couperose, cosmeceutical brands develop special care lines: soft and delicate cleansing, soothing lotions, creams and serums, strengthening the vascular wall and masking agents — powders, day moisturizing CC-creams that perfectly align the tone. Azulene, allantoin, chamomile extract, and panthenol have a calming effect; ideally, the therapy should be complex. You can use light surface chemical peelings and necessarily vitamin C. If the intensity of red areas increases, if there is itching, peeling, tightness - all these are reasons to consult a doctor.

It is worth putting off scrubs and skin cleansing with brushes, home and professional cleaning with heating solutions and vaporizers, aggressive laser sanding and diamond peeling. Such procedures should be replaced with deep skin cleansing with enzyme powder or ultrasound. But taking vitamins may help to maintain the skin in comfort. The trio of vitamins C, K and P reduces the fragility of blood vessels, increases their elasticity and makes the walls as dense as possible. Usually the course lasts from one to six months, depending on the degree of damage and the general body condition, so only the doctor should calculate the mode and interval.
